Milsurp values?

I looked at a couple rifles today that are for sale by a private owner locally. One is a Mosin 7.62x54 short rifle that looks very clean and looks like the wood may have been refinished. It has a glossy varnish of some kind on it and no dents, gouges or cracks that I saw. The second is an 8mm 98 Mauser. The bore looks kinda dark and rough. The receiver ring is marked with a cresent moon and star with 1937 below. The left side of the receiver is marked G somethingW 98. I'm guessing it's a Turk Mauser because of the markings on the receiver ring. The metal looks smooth without rust or pitting on what can be seen without taking it out of the stock. The stock shows the usual dings and small gouges, but nothing real bad. The most attractive part is that the wood has nice tiger striping in the butt and up into the forend. It looks to be walnut and doesn't have any oil soaked areas. Except for the bore, it's in very good condition.
He's asking $160 each. I offered him $125 for the Mauser and he countered at $140. I know little about these types of rifles and less about their value, so would appreciate any info you have.

If the Mosin is an M38,(no folding bayonet), and the bore is good think somewher in the ball park of $125-135 would work. For the Mauser, from what you discribe would say anything under 200.00 would be a good deal. If I were dealing with him, I would offer $250.00 for both, and go up to 300.00 for my high.

If the bore on the 8MM is rough/pitted, the rifle is pretty much useless. IF it's in good shape, maybe $200 or so. The MN-M38 in very good to excellent shape might bring $125. Check the bores on both rifles pretty close. Most, if not all, imported ammunition is corrosive and if the rifle has "sat" dirty for even a day, they'll be pitted (unless you live in a very dry desert) .02

there hasn't been any M38's or 91/59's brought in for sometime now.if you can get a good quality M38 or a 91/59 for 125.00 jump on it.thats dirt cheap.

Thanks for the input guys. He wouldn't come off those prices, so I'm going to pass. I wasn't interested in the M38 for myself and the Mauser bore just looked too rough to me.

last summer I ran across a 8 mm Mauser... stock military,,,,pretty rough barrel for $130.00

Most of the MN's at under $100 are the round receiver 91/30's full length rifles. The carbines are not seen as often.
