    The family heirloom

I was finally gifted a family heirloom, a Remington Rolling Block that hung over the mirror in the family bar and restaurant for decades. I'm pretty sure it's a 43 Spanish, but was unable to find a seemingly easy to use site to ID the rifle in the 34.7 gazillion hits google gave me. Any favorites someone would like to suggest.

ETA, it's full military with stacking stud and cleaning rod. Dated 1888. A #1 right?

Yup, a number 1. Do a chamber cast and check dimensions in Cartridges of the World to be sure of caliber.

One thing about the Argentine contract 43 Spanish rifles (bottleneck case not the straight tapered Reformado...) is that they are apparently the only RBs with a "knoxform" (octagonal) chamber area for the otherwise round barrel. Never heard why but it makes them instantly identifiable - there are many other 43 Spanish that were not Argentine contract though. The Argentine contract also had a much better long range sight than others. Good luck with it.
