    Winchester 70 rebore 35W

Hello guys, got a bit of conundrum on my hands. I bought a Winchester M70 XTR in 270. I wanted the laminate stock for my 6.5x55 because that rifle came with a piece of pulp wood attached. I got a screaming deal on the 270 because about 3 inches down the barrel there is a slight bulge. Since there is no point in owning a rifle I can't shoot, I am considering sending it to Jess Reboring, having the bulge chopped off and having the rifle bored to a 35 Whelen. If Jess agrees to try this, and since the barrel is going to be around the 18" mark, I want to make this a dedicated cast shooter.

Now the question, what twist should I use. I am in on the group buy for a 220gr mold from Miha. I am considering since the barrel would be short maybe something heavier. 275-300gr range.

    Please deposit $.02 below.
    thanks

I don't know the diameter of the barrel but it could end up a little thin around the bore. I would cut the barrel off behind the bulge, use a square and a file to get it even, and find something to crown the barrel a little and see how it shoots. I have done this a few times and the guns have shot good. If it works, you end up with a cheap rifle that handles better than the original, if it doesn't, you are not out anything, but some time. I haven't looked at rebore costs lately but the last I looked I could buy another barrel cheaper. I would chop it and try it before I did anything else. If it shoots OK and you still don't want it, you can sell it.

When you shorten bulged barrels, how do you check the chambers to make sure they aren't compromised?

JES was around $200 for reboring when I checked. A good barrel installed cost more.

A bulged barrel to me means there was an obstruction when discharged. I would need to pull barrel and check locking shoulders for setback and a serious bolt lug inspection just for feel better. 99% of the time one would find nothing, how's your luck? I am pretty sure the barrel will come off for boring. Take off barrels are/can be found pretty cheap and returns the option of more length for balance and increases velocity potential. The XTR is a push feed and if touching shoulder for headspace chase is really required no big deal. Mr. Jesse does some fine work (I being a previous and future customer). Maybe a quick afternoon phone call to him, he may complete all task to meet your needs. I being one that goes from one rabbit hole to the next completely understands the lure of the "donor rifle", one receiver that magically turned into a fourteen hundred dollar rifle comes to mind. But I can never buy exactly what I want at the time, so I make it. Make you happy!

My .35 Whelen has a 1/14" twist, and I am satisfied with it so far.

Thanks for the twist. I am thinking 230 would be the lightest boolit I will shoot.

    .

Jes charges $225 (3-groove) or $250 (4 or 5 groove) for the rebore ( www.35caliber.com ), but he (nor any reputable rebore specialist) take the job if the resultant muzzle OD doesn't have a bbl wall thickness at least .125".

    A rebore to .357" + two .125" barrel thickness' (.250") = .607" OD req'd @ the eventual muzzle.

Measure the bbl OD, where you want it cutoff to exterminate the bulge.

Thank you for those numbers. Maybe if there is enough meat in the barrel I could do a 9.3x62.

I had Jesse rebore my 670 last year, very good work and an excellent price. I'm a little concerned abut the 18" bbl length, would be happier with 20 or 22. Maybe you could find a take-off bbl.

THe 7600 carbine is only 18.5" - I wonder how people do with these?

I have a M70 that has been rebarreled to 35W, heavy profile, 1:14 twist. 250grain cast is the heaviest I have shot:

I also have a M98 that has been re-bored here in Australia. There is plenty of thickness left there from the 8mm barrel - however you are starting with a 270.

Spoke with Jes today. The rifle is will be on its way to him next week to get his assessment. Once it gets there he is going to see if a 9.3x62 is possible, if not a 35 Whelen.
