6 Point Buck vs. 358 Win.

6 Point Buck vs. 358 Win.

I'll bet on the 358 Win. every time !
My cousin shot this 6 point with his 358 Win. at " dark thirty" this afternoon. Distance was 115 yards.

Load was 40 grs. of IMR 7383 with the Lyman 358318 HP ( weighing 262 grs. with lube and gas check ). Bullets sized .360 ".

The bullet did massive damage to the deer !

Yep. Those hollow points do things like that.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Ben, to me this demonstrates why I don't like hollow points for hunting. With a flat meplate, there would have been much less meat loss, and the deer would have been just as dead. Just sayin'.

Nice buck, cousin has good cause to be proud! That's a huge cavity in that boolit, guess that's what caused the even bigger one in the deer. I tried the Gould HP in my 45-70 but couldn't get the groups I wanted. Just as well, I'm pretty sure a 45 cal boolit doesn't need to expand to work.

Good stuff Ben. Have all ways had a soft spot for the 358 win. I have a barrel on the shelf and a VZ33 Small ring mauser 98 with a rough 8mm barrel waiting to be put together when finances allow. Have 2 9x57 mausers sporters but the bores are not quite up to it with boolits, but good as gold with jacketed.
cheers and all the best for the new year, Euan.

The boy had near zero light. He really couldn't see the crosshairs. Lucky to make the shot.

    1Shirt :

Yes, very familiar indeed. Been a good mold, I've enjoyed it.
I've killed several deer with that bullet. It is a killer.

    Nice deer.

Impressive HP on that big slug. Yep, did some extra damage, but I bet he didn't go far.

Those Southern deer must be pretty wimpy. That bullet was just poking along, and anybody who reads a gun magazine knows if it's not going 4500 fps or better it'll just bounce off!

    love my 358 as well
wonder how the hp would do with a more traditional
    lead/tin mix 16/1-20/1something like that
I smashed one and only one deer with my 358 w/cast (acww)
a 240 gr Accurate Molds boolit all I found was the g/c by the rear orifice
    full length penetration
your cuz.should be proud a beaut of a deer and a shot made under less than perfect conditions
    congratulations and job well done
