45 cal maxi hunter

Anyone know much about these? How they shoot? I picked up a mold a little back to shoot out of a TC seneca. I have a maxi ball mold already. I have shoot alot of the maxi balls out of a cherokee when i had one and they shoot pretty good, not as good as patched round ball. I think i will cast some up tonight and hopefully get out and shot them soon. I dont think i have ever really noticed the 45 cal. maxi hunter until i got this mold.

Nothing but allot of people seem to like the maxi hunters and the mould is hard to come by.

I prefer the maxi ball. Works like a champ for me with 70 FFFg. .45 T/C, too. Just got Pat Marlins new invention. It's a luber for the .45 so I won't get too much lube all over the place and it's going to double as a loading board for me, too. Check out his site. It's neat.

Just casted some of each. Maxi ball= 229 gr. Maxi hunter= 247 gr.

Yep H/P pointed Hunter is a T/C advertising wonderment until you read T/Cs sidelock Owners manual. No mention of how one betters the other. (Hunter verses Maxi) Brochure states speeds & impact energy of both maxi profiles are duplicate through-out all T/Cs different powder measured listings. So how one T/C profile is a game changer over the other in targeting or hunting situations? IMO: There probably isn't one best'est T/C maxi.
As far as target accuracy of either Maxi. If its shooter can't see a 2-1/2" grouping or tighter at 75 yards? Time to check or change you're powders Grade & brand.

FWIW, I started using factory Maxi-Balls when T/C introduced them, but they often "penciled-through" a deer, allowing the animal to run off - so I switched to factory Maxi-Hunters as soon as they were introduced, and found they expanded enough (not as much as I've seen from JSP's though) to anchor deer that would have run off otherwise.

I agree. If I can not do that good (2 1/2 inch) at 50 to 75 yards then I begin to search for the combo that will do so.

I begin with some 25 yard groups to find a good 1 inch or smaller load before stretching out to the 50 to 100 yards.

I begin with a moderate to smaller load and bracket up in 2 or so grains to find the smallest group of 3 shots.then I switch to a different f granulation and begin anew with the 3 shot bracket groups.

Might try other types and heat of caps as well.

Looking forward to your progress with these boolits as I have a TC Hawken in the 45 cal as well and the 48 inch twist by 28 inch length.

Went and shot some yesterday. But it was pretty windy. Both the maxi's showed promise but then there was always one flier. at 25 yards it would be 3/8" group and then a 2" flier. The one that seems to always shot ok and consistent is the lee 450-200gr for cap n ball revolvers. At 25 yards it is usually 3/4"-1" and it loads the easiest. The maxi ball was the next easiest to load and the maxi hunter you probably wouldn't want to shoot more then 2 without cleaning. I was loading between 60-70 gr 3f goex and a lubed 1/8" felt wad. I also cleaned the barrel with 1 patch between each shot. I'm thinking that the lee shoots ok because it is the lighter and shortest of them all. I also tried the lee 456-220 and it didn't do good.

Has anyone tried shooting these conicals un-lubed with a lubed wad before? I may try it and see how that goes. that's what I do in my revolvers with great results but they only have 8" of barrel.

I have only shot the lee 200 with 60 gr. Maybe i will try 70gr and see if that tightens it up.

What is the twist on your gun?

1 in 48 like most TC

Now i cant remember for sure if i have checked the twist on this gun. Maybe i assumed it had a 1 in 48. It is an older seneca the barrel isnt marked seneca.

1 in 48 isn't a bad twist if that's what it is but not the best for a conical in 45 cal. In other words it should shoot it ok but not the best for conical. It might do better with a shorter conical an may be doing the best it can with what you got.

This is cool ... I just looked at my 450/200 Lee myself and wondered how it would do in my 45 Hawken from TC.

Guess nuttin to do but try it as you did. Thanks for the inspiration ... Should do bout as good as a round ball as it is little longer then one.
