    Wad Cutter Minie Ball

I was browsing a stack of old magazines and found this picture in the 1982 Navy Arms muzzleloader issue. The article was about casting techniques and troubleshooting, and no word was written about the unusual bullet design. Were minie ball wad cutters common for competition, or is the extreme meplat for some other purpose?

I was a member of the NSSA for many years. One of the competition events was a 2 x 6 placed in a hole in the ground. An 8 man Civil War musket team had to shoot the stake and cut it in half. It was a timed event shot at 50 yards. Someone came up with a hollow base .58 and .69 caliber Minie wadcutter mold that could be used to hasten the shooting of the wooden stake.

Yup. they were for stakebusting and not for cutting clean holes in paper.
Old enough to know better, young enough to do it anyway!
