    Lyman 311290 HP'd

Just received my Lyman 311290 that was HP'd by Erik.

    As usual, excellent workmanship ! ! !

Now to cast a few. These weighed in at 222 grs. prior to HP'ing. These HP's that I cast today weigh 207 grs. with lube and g/c. Bands mike .3115, nose .3015". G/C is a good snug fit.

I have a variety of pins for this one also. ( cup points, deep HP pins, flat pin with no HP at all , etc . )

Look at the group my 06' was shooting with this bullet prior to the HP work :

I'm guessing what, 1400 fps? That HP should do a fine job on deer!

You're killing me Ben. You're just killing me......
I have an itch for that boolit but there isn't a chance in hell I'd tinker with my 311290 since it shoots so well as is. Looks like I need to find another 311290 to play with.

FWIW I had no issue at all with my redneck HP 311290s at 2K. Expansion was fantastic on a 140# dressed buck and it still managed to punch through a shoulder blade on the way in and a couple ribs. I would liken it's performance to the old nosler solid base bullets.

    fatnhappy :

I finally shot my HP's today that you see in the above photos. I also tested them for penetration and expansion. Stellar results in both categories.

As you can see from the test target shown above, the bullet shot real well as a solid. " Beagle " has always told me that he has never seen a HP'd bullet that didn't shoot better as a HP than it did as a solid. So, I decided to take a chance with my mold. I have no regrets.

I shot the HP's at 80 yards,( as you see in the target below )..5 shots....30/06, 16.0 grs. of 2400. My deer stand will barely allow a shot of that distance ( pretty thick where I'm hunting ) many of my shots will be much closer. The bullets were sized .3097" with a honed Lee Push thru sizer. When the bullets come from the Lee push thru ( Nose 1st ) sizer, I then move over to my Lyman 45 and lube ( only ) with a .311 H & I sizing die using my own lube that I make locally. For me, this strategy seems to offer the very best accuracy in my rifles. The " Nose 1st " sizing system, in my opinion, is " THE WAY " to size a bullet.

This will kill deer all day long for me where I'm hunting ! ! !

Very nice looking boolits, and they sure shoot well, too!

Gonna be a bad time for some deer this fall.

once again, we see targets that continually miss the dot or the penny... sheesh....

    GREAT shooting!

I too have found that the Lee push through, going nose first to size and check is the way to go, then I use my lyman for lubing. Prevents that nasty nose bulging on the HP's.

Ben what are you lubing your boolits with prior to them going through the push through sizer?

    Ben,
I am surprised that you use no filler with only 16 gr of 2400. But, I consider you the expert with 2400 and you have the groups to prove it. I am loading some 311284's w/2400 this morning w/o filler.
    Thanks for your help, malcolm

Malcolm, that load is a standard with no filler in most standard size .30 cases, most boolits recomended by C E Harris. The article is here.

Each bullet gets a VERY thin film of black moly grease prior to going through the Lee Nose 1st sizing die.

Once the bullet is sized , it is taken over to my Lyman 45 and lubed with an H & I sizer that is larger than the sized bullet. This allows lubing of the bullet but NO FURTHER SIZING.

It has been a good system for me ! !

Those are beautiful bullets, and has me contemplating having one of my heavyweights HPed. How would they perform at 2000fps? Would a low antimony content alloy just blow the nose off?

Would a flat nose, or very shallow HP be better than the deep HP at the higher velocity?
