(Today's Feature)Another Wake-Up Call For Near-Retired Politicians
Deb Fischer’s win in Nebraska’s senatorial primary Wednesday continued the trend in Republican primaries in which “establishment” candidates, and often incumbents, are defeated. I’m sure that long-serving incumbents, especially those who have pretty conservative voting records, are shocked that they are being primaried and then being beaten by people with less funding and less name recognition.Until recently it was unheard of. It’s clear from their departing speeches that some of them have few clues as to the reasons for their defeat. They, along with many media commentators, seem to think that Republicans, conservatives and Tea Partiers all woke up one morning and decided to become mean, irrational, partisan, uncompromising and against the government or anything else smacking of authority.
