Has anyone tried to make hollow points on lead bullets using a drill bit??

Yes, and it works great on cast pistol and rifle bullets. You do need to make a centering jig. I used 1/2" aluminum rod, drilled it through on the lathe with the HPing bit and then cut an interior cone on one end with a countersink. I have mine set up in an old lathe-type case trimmer, the idea I got right from the Midway catalog looking at a picture of Foster's tool. It also helps if you grind the bit to more of a point or use the tapered bit from a wood countersinking set minus the collar. With a drill press you set the depth - I wouldn't want to try it with a hand drill as you have no way to control the depth and if the hole is off center the bullet will not fly true.
