View Full Version : 35 Whelen....
Sometime ago I traded for a Mauser that had been rebarreled to 35 Whelen back in the early 50's. 21 inch barrel, European type stock...narrow fore-end,very lightweight.... . I finally took it to a smith here and had a good trigger and a set of Lyman target sights put on it.
My question now is, loads. Anyone have any pet loads? This short barrel leads me to think that maybe IMR4895 might work well but who knows. Ideas? Suggestions?
I am not quite sure on this one. Just out of curiosity, why do you think IMR 4895 would be a good choice?
Have you used R25 (Reloader 25) powder for any rifle reloads?
No, havent used r25 but I have thought about it cause Ive heard alot of good things about it.
As for IMR4895, it haqs a fairly good track recordwith the 30-06,270 etc, its a fairly middle of the road powder as far as burn rate goes and I know that with a 21 inch barrel it would be useless going too slow and most of all....I have ALOT of it! Im going to go check the burn rate on the R25.
The burn rate is rather slow. I've used it for reloading my 300 weatherby and I think to get up to what I wanted (3200 fps) it took almost 88 grains. Which when I placed the lead in, it had to squish the powder down.
Anyone out their have some good loads for a 35 Whelen ?

I have experimented quite a bit with my Rem.700 Classic in 35 Whelen. Rel.15 is highly recommended but soo far my best accuracy
with 250gr. Bulletts has been with 55.0gr. of Imr4895 and Hornady roundnose or speer hotcore spitzer and 58.0gr of XMR4064 and Speer GrandSlam, infact the Grandslam load cuts a ragged hole at 100yds.
Cases used were Rem.35Whelen,CCI200 primer. I know the XMR load sounds hot and of course you should work up too it, but in my rifle boy does it shoot. At 200yds shooting prone with a sling you can keep them in the X-ring no problem with that load.

the load i used the most was 54gr h322 with a 225gr nosler balistic tip in military cases. this load shot 2"@ 100 (would have liked a better) but only opened to 2.5@300. i have no problem with that for a hunting rifle! more velocity and less recoil with 180s compaired to the o6. thinking about having it A.I.ed
