Look up a model 225 at the above link, I think you might get lucky. There were a bunch of them, all pretty much the same just minor differences, and some were sold with other names on them, too, IIRC. If that doesn't work, post a picture and we'll figure it out.

if its old may be model 40,new ones are model 340 bolt ass complete is $80 and mag is $24.85. they make good shooters.

Asked Gun Parts Corp.. She said sounded like 340 but without a model number on rifle she wasn't sure. Research elsewhere suggests it may be a Model 40 but again, not sure. I want to order the correct parts but am unsure how to proceed.

1) Open an account for picture hosting, like on the main page here http://gunloads.com/index.php . I have never used ours but it should be standard procedure;

2) Upload your pics (probably from your Desktop/floppy/etc...; "browse" to find the upload location). You will get addresses for them;

3) In your post, write yourpicaddress (copy and paste the stuff, from http to .jpg), or hit http://forum.gunloads.com/images/editor/insertimage.gif in the Message toolbar.

The pic should show in Preview Post, or you can edit your post later.

Please try to keep its size around 100kb for dial-up users, or chose the thumbnail option.

You need to store your picture online on a specialized website, so that it can be available to us when you are offline.

I was born and raised in Yerington. My name is Tony Gable. Do you know any of the Gable's there. I'm related to them all. Anyway, back to you question. Have you taken the stock off to see if the serial and moled number are on the underside of the barrel. Just a thought. I have seen them there on older guns.

Almost. It's an older one. I can tell that from the way that the barrel is attached. It's not a 225. It's a little hard to see some important details. The mag release looks like it's in front of the mag well, correct? What exactly does the roll-stamped writing on the barrel beside the rear sight say?

Well, let's take a look. The mag release is on the right side of the mag well. Yes, on the side. The writing on the left side beneath the rear sight is ".30-30." On the other side is "Hi-Pressure Steel - Proof Tested." On the left side of the action it reads "SAVAGE" Beneath that it reads "Super Sporter." Beneath that is "11179." Close examination with magnifying glass reveals no further markings. How are we doing? Got an ID yet?

I am not a Savage collector by any stretch of the imagination, though I have owned a few and I do know a bit about the 99's. I have never seen a Savage bolt with a mag release on the side, and there isn't a description of anything like it in any of my books. The familiar knurled barrel nut is not apparent on this model, either, which ought to be a point that would make it easier to identify. I am baffled. What do you think, guys? Who knows a collector?

A: Savage manufactured the Model 40 and Model 45 Super Sporter centerfire bolt-action rifles from 1928 to 1940. The Model 40 has a standard-grade smooth pistol-grip stock while the Model 45 is a special grade with select checkered walnut pistol-grip stock. During 1936 the stock was changed so that the magazine was flush with the bottom of the stock. A Schnabel fore-end and pistol-grip cap were added. The Model 45 was discontinued during 1940, and approximately 5,900 were manufactured. The Model 40 stock was then checkered and discontinued during 1942. Approximately 16,200 were manufactured. The retail price in 1929 for the Model 40 was $35, and the Model 45 retailed for $44.50. During 1939 the retail price for the Model 40 was $42.50, and the Model 45 retailed for $51.50. An 80 percent specimen of either model is valued at around $200. A 95 percent Model 40 is valued at $250 while a 95 percent Model 45 should bring around $275.

One of the threads says that the number"40" was reused recently for a Varmint model, but calibers should differ.

From what I've read so far, even if I find a replacement bolt it may be unsafe to use it without having it fitted to my paticular rifle. If that is the case I'm out of luck because that would be beyond my capabilities and the cost of a gunsmith would not be worth it. Am I correct on this?

If you get a bolt that fits, it will very likely be shootable - .30-30's headspace on the rim, not the case shoulder. I have seen similar bolts interchange without problems and I think it's worth a try (you can return it to GPC if it doesn't fit). Fireform cases to the chamber and then neck size them for subsequent firings. I think the hard part might be coming up with mags for it. If you are into casting, you may have yourself a gold mine as there is no more cast-friendly rifle cartridge than the .30-30, and many of those old Savages are tack drivers with their favorite loads.

Well, thanks to a tip from k-g I have a magazine coming that I found on gun broker. Again, thanks to k-g I've ordered a bolt assembly from gun parts corp.. Hope it fits. Maybe this old gun can see service once again. I thank not only k-g but also versifier who guided me through this. Couldn't have done it without you guys. I'm new to this site and I'm amazed at the knowledge that is out there and especially grateful that those who have that knowledge are willing to share.

Keep us up to date on what happens. Old rifles usually have interesting stories to go with them, and even if this one doesn't, it's good to watch it come to life again. Just remember that when you load that mag up, you have to be really careful about the case rims. If you don't watch it, the rim of an upper round can slip behind that of the one below it. It is not only embarassing when two rounds try to feed at the same time, but if you are operating the bolt with the necessary snap, it can take more than a few frustrating minutes to get everything apart and untangled. This will inevitably happen either when you are about to shoot at game, or when you have a large audience of the curious at the range, and in neither situation will you have anything more for tools than a pocket knife. The Brits got around this problem with their .303 in the SMLE's by curving the mags and designing the feed lips so the rounds stagger properly, but with Savages, you have to pay attention while loading or you'll get into a gom.

P Gable is my grand mother, Don is my uncle and A.M. is my mother. I get down there quite a bit. Do you hunt coyotes. Maybe we could do a couple of stands together.
