My brother in law has a .45-120 sharps, he wants to know if you can reload with smokeless powder as opposed to black powder. If you can, what are some benefits? Drawbacks? and where can a guy find the reloading tables. Thank you.

Hi Jason,
Welcome to Gunloads. While I do not have an answer for you, other than that you can substitute with Pyrodex, I think someone around here ought to be able to point you in the right direction.

If the gun is fairly recent and has been proofed for smokeless, yes.

Look for Cowboy/obsolete data at http://www.accuratepowder.com/ and http://hodgdon.com/

Go on Accurate Arms I believe they have some loads there for smokeless.
The closest I have is a 45-100 and I have loaded it with smokeless.
Good luck Ken

If the firearm is designed for only black powder pressures, you would need to be careful on your chosen loads, but it is *possible*. You would be in experimental neighborhood though.

Jason,
Use caution, of course!
