Can anyone help me find a link to a site that I visited several months ago? It was a site on the Mauser mod.98. I can find some that are about the 98 but the one I am looking for tells everything you nees to know to identify your 98. It tells the factory and stuff like that. I have recently discovered some new markings on mine and wish to solve the mystery. Please offer anything you can.

I have no idea about the site, but I have a good book on Mausers and their history. Post a photo and maybe I can find out.

I'll see if I can describe it to you first. It is to do with a set of #'s on the reciever . They are on the left by the mfr date. Meaning I have a 1943 "byf" aka Oberndorf mod.98. The serial # are all the same but I am not sure what I have in the front left on the reciever. It seems to be a different set of #'s that are very faint. These numbers I have never noticed before. I can tell you that my grandfather bought this gun in the year 1950 or 1951 I am not sure exactly, but it was bought in a hardware store. He told me that it was all covered in grease(cosmoline I presumed)and in excellent cond. It still is really nice. Would recievers possibly made in another arsenal have a different "proof" # ? or do I have something else? I can send a pic but I dont have a posted pic on any site.

It is the little solar clock on your Explorer toolbar . You can extend its memory in "Tools" / "Internet Options".

That looks like a serial number. That's where it is located on my Oberndorf. It is in the wrong position for a mfg code or arsenal marking. Are the last three digits repeated on bolt and other parts?

Proof marks for a WWII era Mauser are Nazi eagles holding swasticas, and the mfg code is from WWII. If the number is different from the obvious serial number, I don't have a clue what it might be, because it is right in the spot where you usually find the serial number.

This is the only number like it on the whole gun. The numbers on the bolt handle, the opposite side of the reciever, floor plate, and on the stock, etc are all (5351). That is what I thought the serial #'s were. I never really had the proper book to tell me. I may need to go to the library.
Thanks The proofs are not the "eagle" it is more like the thunderbird type. I am familiar with the eagles though. Mine is with the #135 under it. Another clue to its manufacture.

Hmmm. I don't have a clue what the faintly stamped number might be. The book doesn't mention or picture anything about it.
