View Full Version : 45 Long Colt
If I decide to buy this round what are some good loads?
Looking for both hunting and plinking loads.

Tell ya Kirk, lottsa good loads out there for up to 300grain bullets in this old workhorse. From the 8 grains of Unique under 250gr cast fer a plinker, to the 300gr XTP with 16.5 grs of 2400gr for deer. 20.0 gr of Accurate #9 will work also, but only for the 'tender/Encore or Ruger guns, with 265 gr cast bullets. Just be careful you don't use some of these loads in a Colt SAA. Just my 2 cents. Bob
Thanks Bob!
Been looking at the Ruger Vaquero (sp?) good strong frame from what I'm told.
To many toys to buy and never enough money :(

Strong as all other Rugers for sure. If ya haven't heard by now, Kirk, Ruger has downsized this model for '05......can still find older models of Vaquero, til new ones come out. By the way....Vaquero.... is Spanish for ...cowboy......bet ya really don't give a rat about that, now do ya....lol...

I've used 10.6gr of Blue Dot behind a 250gr RNFP
with success...about 700 fps.
That being said, I will probably move to about 11gr.
to avoid leading that the bullet manuf. (Bushwhacker)
told me I'd encounter if I did not tweak it a bit....up in th 850 fps
range.
