Ran out of 45acp 230 grn r/n bullets,but had a large quantity of 45L/Colt flat nose 253 grns on hand. As they had to be seated much deeper to feed ok I reduced the load by10%, resized the bullets to 451 and at 25yrds had the most accurate shoot in my std 1911 that ive ever had.Not going to bother with the 230s anymore.

Being as they are long the barrel gets a better hold on them.
Luck has it they are also closer to the length that is optimum efficent for your rate of twist.

Isn't shathouse luck in trial and error a great thing!!!

I've been loading and shooting the big cowboy bullets for about 12 yrs. 250rnfp/255lswc'rs work great as long as you load them very short (as you found out). My normal oal is 1.175-1.195. Been told by a LOT of people that you can't load 300 gr'rs, but don't tell my pistols that, because they've worked fine for me. I'm known on several other forums for my love of the heavy bullets. +P's with Power Pistol are literally a blast. Congrats. Tracy

just don't try the 350 or 405 gr 45-70 slugs.. I doubt you'd get enough powder in the case to make it exit the muzzle.. if it did, you'd be able to out run the slug to the target..
