Howdy All!
I had joined this forum years ago and fell off for one reason or another. The drive never left, the internet desire faded.
I am at a point in my life where this forum resonates with me much more clearly than when I first began. In any event, allow me to reintroduce myself with my two favorite rifles! Yeah, you can have two favorites! There aren’t any rules!
Figure we’ll talk about this baby first. Early 90’s No.1 H in the venerable .375 H&H Magnum. So many things to say, I’ll start with this : I’m still young with good joints (31; 5’10 / firm 170#). The first center fire rifle I ever bought (two days after turning 18) was a new (JM) 1895GS. It has been a big bore love affair since. The recoil impulse, at least on my rifle, is mild in relation to how the internet built it up. I
laughed after my first trigger pull and excitedly shoved another 300gr solid (1850 fps) into the chamber. A nice big push, almost slow, if you will.
Red pad, good wood. The attractors that led me to the GB listing that NO ONE was bidding on. Do believe it was picked up for $1100…good news to me!!
This hunting season has been all buckshot so far. But when I get to colder months, the No.1 will get a chance to try her luck!
Ok, moving on…needle rifle…
The decade long search was realized last year (2021). Ten years prior (as a twenty year old), the fire was lit in me. I first caught whiff of these rifles (1874 Sharps in general), and quickly learned everything I good of the fine folks in Big Timber. The cliff notes read as such -
Retired fella in North Carolina (25 minutes from where I USED TO LIVE!!) reached out to me informing me of his offer. He knew I was searching for a Pedersoli 1885 at the time. My now good friend told me he just couldn’t stand people paying the $$ for the Italians that used to be reserved for the Americans..a true man after my heart. I too hate gouging, price hikes, and anything that keeps a working man out of what USED to be their sport. So he gave me a month and an exclusive offer to gather funds. Being that this gun was so gravitational in my life, I began making For Sale ads in earnest. Well… money raised, rifle owned.
My friend in NC had Unertl mounts staked for his aging eyes. Man ALIVE does that man have some awesome glass to aid him. I wanted to shoot ‘er with peeps, and have a C.Sharps mid range on the rear…should heavily consider a Hadley to add to it. I also need to have a pair of glasses made up for me. Y’all know the kind I’m talking about. 36” in the dominant, infinite in the secondary. Enough blabbering!
So it’s a Montana RR, 30” hvy oct, a good off the rack they sometimes have in stock. Just a solid dagone rifle.
One thing I did do, was remove the barrel sight. I didn’t really want to buy a blank…really I WISH I had a Buffalo nickel..but I figured I’d make a blank out of a Jefferson Peace Nickel.
It was such an easy little project, and I felt it made my rifle, more, MY rifle.
Any way! There they are. My two (favorite) rifles, both single-shot!
