favourite 270 win loads

Im just wondering what everyones favourite 270 load is, I just bought a 270 and need a load for it.

I think you'll be happy with the performance of your .270. It has been a few years since I had one to play with, but looking up the records I was working with 140gr Sierra GK's with IMR4064 in a Rem700. Not the fastest combination, but the accuracy was excellent and he liked it so well that he's still hunting with the load I worked up for him in the early '80's. I wanted to try a different powder to get some higher velocities, but he was getting 1.5" 5shot 200yd groups (the best he could do with factory ammo was 4") and decided not to try fixing what worked. I had made a note to try IMR4350 next, but we never did. You might want to try the 150GK's, too, the extra weight won't hurt for elk hunting, and your rifle may have a preference for one bullet over the other. You might also consider trying some Nosler PARs in it, they make 130, 140, 150, and 160's. They aren't always the most accurate in every rifle, but their performance on large game is legendary.

I bought a marlin xl7, i was thinking of shooting 150's out of it for everything because at longer distances in the wind we get here the extra wieght will help a lot. I think i might try IMR 4350 with a 150 nosler partition. Even with a 150 grainer I am able to get 2900 to 3000 fps, which is lots for anything.

What would you compare the recoil of the 270 with?

I think it's pretty close to the -06, in a similar weight rifle with the same weight bullet. Maybe a tad easier on the shoulder, but it's in the same ballpark. Start with light bullets and work up if you need to. Nothing with that (or larger) case capacity is a lot of fun on the bench for long sessions, but I have found that using a Past Recoil shield not only makes it a much more pleasant experience but also takes up the space where in winter would be my heavy hunting coat, so that when I get out there in the field, the rifle feels the way it should when I shoulder it. I have yet to notice recoil or report from any rifle or shotgun fired at live game.

I agree that you don't feel recoil in the field, because your more worried about shot placement and whether or not the animal went down. I shoot my dads -06 with no problem and hes shooting 165's.

That 165 grain loading in the '06 is very popular with me, too. I always took my '06 along as my backup rifle to my 300 Win Mag when we went hunting in Colorado. We were after both Deer and Elk there.

The 300 WM was the primary for Elk, but the '06 was primary for Deer, and quite adequate for Elk, if necessary.
